Designing a festival app – a hackathon experience

–editor’s note–

Two weeks ago we organized a hackathon with a goal of making the best open source festival app so that any festival can have one with minimal effort. The project is based on our three-year collaboration with Ruisrock and Fonecta, and they were kind enough to let us open-source the old code base. The current status of the project can be found on GitHub.

We asked Ruisrock’s producer Annakaisa Anttila to write down a few lines about her weekend experience at the event, and she was glad to do so. Read on to hear the customer’s side of a busy weekend of code and energy drinks.

–editor’s note–

Little did I know before the hackathon.

I …

So we won! Kärkimedia Baari was recognized in two of the most prestigious marketing communications and service design competitions in Finland. Baari won the title of best B2B service in Grand One and silver in the service design category in Vuoden Huiput.

Our mission is to make successful digital services. So what makes Baari so special? What factors contributed to making this service a success?

Direction from vision

From early on, Kärkimedia has been at the forefront of developing digital tools to support media planning and sales. The service vision that Kärkimedia had created for Baari was a critical starting point for the work. In addition, adequate investment of precious time …

On weddings and brainstorming ideas

Service Design Lead

“Do we really believe that brainstorming for ideas is necessary?”, asked my colleague Mari as we were preparing for a session. “We have many, many examples of how perfectly good services were designed without an explicit session or process to generate ideas.”

A friend of mine told me about her cousin and her wife. The cousin had gotten married few months ago and the couple decided to have a very small wedding with only a handful of people present. Few weeks back, the friend of mine met the cousin’s wife for the first time. She was a lovely person, and it was great to meet her. But my friend was left slightly empty after the meeting.

Later she realised that …

Houkutteleva tietoyhteiskunta ei tuijota tekniikkaa

Service Design Lead

This post is in Finnish, and we apologise to those who would prefer a less cryptic encoding in our blog. However, because this post refers to a Finnish newspaper editorial, we decided to write in the same language as the original text.

Helsingin Sanomien pääkirjoituksessa 17.3.2014 tuotiin esiin, että tietoyhteiskuntaa rakennettaessa suuri osa järjestelmistä on tehty helpoksi käyttää, mutta loppujen lopuksi ihmiset eivät ole aina halukkaita tai motivoituneita käyttämään palveluita. Palveluiden käytöstä ei nähty olevan hyötyä.

Tämä on erityisen totta vanhemman väestön keskuudessa. HS:n pääkirjoitus viittaa TSN Gallupin tutkimukseen, ja saman olen havainnut tutkijakollegoideni kanssa (Näsänen et al., 2009): 55–65-vuotiaat aikuiset eivät nähneet hyötyjä siinä, että siirtäisivät sosiaaliset suhteensa verkkoon, koska verkko koettiin kylmänä ja vaarallisena paikkana*.

Kuulostaa perin oudolta, että on suunniteltu tietojärjestelmiä, joita ihmiset eivät halua käyttää. Syyn …

Intelligent authentication

Senior IT Specialist

TL;DR: Can you spend a few minutes participating in a short survey?

I’m writing my master’s thesis about intelligent authentication: the idea is to build a system that makes automatic decisions based on location, access times and other datasets. For example, if user tries to access our internal service from the office with their own computer, right after using electronic door key, the chance is high the login attempt is legitimate. If that is the case, there’s no need to ask for password yet again. Everyone hates entering username and password every single morning, especially after already signing in to their workstation.

I have two features that need more validation data: locating users and identifying …

Kärkimedia Baari nominated as “Best B2B service” finalist in Grand One 2014

Senior Consultant

Media companies around the world are quickly adapting to the digital era. It’s not only about serving the consumers in multiple digital channels, but catering for the needs of media buyers as well. Kärkimedia is a sales and marketing organisation representing 34 leading Finnish newspapers. Being a pioneer of media buying automation, Kärkimedia wanted to stand out of its competitors by focusing on innovative services.

The challenge presented to Futurice was simple. Firstly, we were expected to take Kärkimedia’s customer experience to the next level by creating a comprehensive digital platform for the newspaper advertisers. The other goal was to change the image of newspaper marketing in the eyes of advertisers, from old school & stiff to appealing and modern.

Underlining gender in IT

Service Design Lead

Topics

To honour the international women’s day on March 8th we asked some of our women to write down their thoughts about working in an IT company.

We hope that reading these will make you think whether gender should be underlined in the IT world or not. A common thread in all these texts is that labelling “women in IT” feels unnecessary and even irritating, and some authors chose not to underline “being a woman” at all.

To quote Shumeng’s text below: “At Futurice, I actually haven’t been addressed as a female before and for me that’s something really worth celebrating on the international women’s day.”

Read further how our colleagues tell in their own words what it is like to …

Introducing children to the joy of programming

Senior Software Architect

When I heard there was going to be a code school session for children at Futurice, it was clear I wanted to participate with my daughter Tilda, who is 4 years and 7 months old.

The code school is an event where 4–9-year-old children come to learn elementary programming with their parents. Futurice organized it’s own internal event for employees in mid-February. The event started with a short introduction by our head instructor Tiina, also known as FutuDino, and after that we went straight into coding.

The environment used was Turtle Roy, where you use simple programming commands to create simple drawings. You can compose the basic …

Lean Service Creation, part 1

Senior Consultant

During the last decade our clients have leaped into digital business. Together we have experienced huge successes and also some major flops. This is my summary of what we have learned.

The success factors in building digital services seem to be recurring and possible to summarize in one paragraph. Let me try!

Make sure you identified a problem worth solving. Find a passionate owner for it. Take an even more passionate team that breathes the same air with its customers, a team cross-functional, co-located and skilled enough to deliver awesomeness. Add a good methodology (and some money). Let them work hard, iterate and converge into success… or fail fast.

Our work is based on teachings of …

Futurice Design Day

UI/ UX & Concept Design

Topics

Early this month we gathered Futurice designers across Europe to spend one day dedicated entirely to what brought us together in the first place: our shared passion to design and realize impactful digital services.

Aalto’s Startup Sauna in Espoo, Finland, was taken over by our designers from Berlin, Tampere, Helsinki and London to inspire each other through the great work that we have been doing in all four offices across Europe, to identify, articulate and share best practices and methodologies and to envision the future of digital service design.

Solving complex issues

The Design Day provided a fantastic opportunity to talk about our ambitions, our future, what kind of company we want to be and simply how to …
